Tuomas Laitinen

Tuomas Laitinen is a finnish artist working in the field of experimental performance and new forms of theatre. His main interest is in directing, but he has worked also as a sound designer and composer, performer, musician and dancer.

Laitinen's work is culminated in the relationship of body and mind, and presence. Body and mind as the realization of the dialectical nature of life, presence as the quest for unity through this polarity. What distinguises performance and live art from the other forms of art is the presence of bodies as it's foundation. Performance is the art of thought incarnate.

For the last years Laitinen has focused especially on the bodily experience of the spectator, combining the practice of bodily awareness with the idea of performance as a state of consciousness. In these forms of expression the questions of duality and unity are even more prevalent and compelling. Performance focusing on the experience of the spectator exposes her consciousness inevitably to change. The negotiation of proximity evident in participatory arts suggests contemplation of the questions of relation and the self. Through these ideas Laitinen is also interested in the sacred dimensions of art and performance as a spiritual practice.

Laitinen works in Reality Research Center, a Finland-based performing arts garage dedicated to question the prevailing concept of reality.
