These are the suggested rules for playing what has been called "The Dancing Conversation", "Speakeasy" and "The Moving Conversation Game". Please feel welcome to try it out, you can download the rules as PDF below. Click here to see how it looked when we did it during möte09 at Weld.
SPEAKEASY in a setting of 10 people:
Rules
1. 2 chairs facing each other, 5 chairs on each side in a semi-circle.
2. The 2 people sitting in the chairs facing each other have a conversation on a pre-selected topic. [Suggestion: The figure of the guest.]
3. The chairs around the 2 facing chairs are occupied by participants /listeners except for 2 chairs, these remain empty and available.
4. At any moment the listener can enter the conversation by signalling (s)he wants to do so [for example by raising his/her arm] and is recognized by at least 1 of the speakers.
At this point a new line is set-up between the entering participant and the speaker who recognized him/her. The semi-circles are reconfigured around the fictional line between the 2 facing chairs. In this way the constellation moves through the space.
5. At any time 1 or both of the speakers can leave and take a seat on 1 of the empty chairs in the semi-circle.
The speaking chairs can now be occupied by any other participant.
Options
* Satellite constellation:
A listener can move his/her seat to another place in the room; initiating another possible constellation following the same figure.
* Traces:
Participants mark their journey through the space by sticking an arrow on the floor -each time they reposition their chair- in the direction they sit.
* Marking space:
If your playing field needs spatial references for better orientation, use something like tape or chalk to draw a few lines or figures.
