COPACABANA<=>RIBERSBORG
COPACABANA<=>RIBERSBORG is a project by Valentina Desideri and Paula Caspão and is a must for anyone with the aims to become a connaisseur of contemporary choreography!
Playing with the collective imaginaries that travel across places like Copacabana and with the fact that Ribersborg is indeed known as the Scandinavian Copacabana, this project tries to explore the blurring of boundaries between geographical spaces and their related mental geographies.
To start with, it consists in re-enacting 40 minutes of a real life situation captured in Copacabana beach, temporarily exported to Sweden. On June 15th 2009, at a sunny Ribersborg beach, 20 participants wearing Brazilian swimming suits will each follow a score, consisting of more or less usual beach actions previously recorded in Copacabana. In this situation, the participants will be the actors, producers, and makers of the ‘piece’.
This proposal is part of a set of try-outs around the question “How can a project produce its own economy?” In this specific case, the issue was how a selling activity can function within an artistic project and be considered at the same level of all the other elements that are part of it, namely as any visible experience to be shared with others. That is why the project functions on the basis of CopaCabana Kits that can be bought by anyone willing to participate. Still, it has to be noticed that buying a CCK is not just about buying the props required by the re-enactment activity, i.e. a swimming suit (straight from Copacabana beach). It’s rather about taking part in this live piece (or better, in this piece of life), as well as participating in the very production of the event, i.e. literally allowing it to happen and develop.
Now what exactly happens when 40 min of Copacabana are dislocated from its usual environment and re-located in Ribersborg?
Well… nothing that couldn’t be discussed with a juicy cocktail at the beach, during the conversation that will follow the piece. For Copacabana<=> Ribersborg is an object that can be considered in multiple ways: a modality of encounter, a discussion on production modalities, a performance, or just a way of re-imagining /re-inhabiting places.

The ‘piece’ will take place in Ribersborg beach (exact location tba) on June 15th 2009 at 14h.*
CopaCabana Kits will be sold at a theatre near you (tba within shortly).

*Participants will have to be at Ribersborg beach at 13:30, half an hour prior to the performance, equipped with their CopaCabana Kit. A swimming suit to be worn during the piece is contained in the CCK, however participants can wear their own swimming suit, if preferred.
